VOLUME OF WATER

I am looking for a formula for determing the amount of water in a given size opening. I have an opening 17 inches wide and 24 inches deep.
I need to know how much water would be in that hole in order to know the amount being pumped in a given time.
Hope someone has this answer.

You've left out one of the dimensions. 17 inches wide x ?? inches Long x 24 inches deep. With only two dimensions I can tell you how many square inches of water there is - the area, but I can't tell you the volume.

Right then. We're looking for the volume of a cylinder.

The formula for the area of a cylinder is the area of the circle times the depth, or π * r² * h.

If the diameter is 17 inches, then the radius is 8.5 inches. Now that we have everything, we fill in the numbers:

π * r² * h = volume

3.1415 * 8.5 in² * 24 in = volume

3.1415 * 72.25 in² * 24 in = 5447.361 in³

So there are 5447.361 in³ of water. just what is this in gallons?

Well, one gallon is equal to 231 cubic inches, so:

5447.361 in³ / 231 gal/in³ = 23.58 gallons
