Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. Month after month we saw less posts with questions and answers from real people and more spam posts. We were spending more and more resources cleaning the spam until there were less them 1 legitimate message per 100 spam posts. Then we decided it's time to stop.
All the posts in the forum will be available and searchable. We understand there are a lot of useful information and we aren't going to remove anything. As for the new questions, you can always ask them on

i know that to get the sq. ft. i multiply length times width, but what i'm needing to convert is 10'6"x13'9". the inches are throwing me off. how to i convert this??

Convert the inches to a decimal fraction of a foot. Since 1 ft = 12", 6" = 0.5 ft and 9" = 0.75 ft, so your dimensions are 10.5' x 13.75'

It's actually 8 ft2.
24" * 48" = 1152 in2
There are 144 in2 in a ft2, 1 ft2 = 12" * 12" = 144 in2
1152 in2 / 144 in2 = 8 ft2

Ok I want to convert 36" x 42" to sq. ft.
So I multiplied 36 x 42 = 1512
then I divided 1512 by 144 = 10.5
So do I use a decimal or a fraction for square foot?
example: 10.5 sq ft or 10 1/2 sq ft

Normal use is decimals. Using fractions for area measurements make it confusing. Even architects use decimals for area whereas for linear measurements, if in units of feet and inches, fractions are used (i.e., 15' 8-3/8") for the construction of buildings, etc. as that's how most tape measures are marked.
