Well, a sq. yard is a measure of area, and linear yard really is not a measure of anything, unless it is simply 3 feet, which is commonly referred to as a yard, not really a linear yard.
But a square yard is 9 square feet. 9 square feet could be considered 9 feet long and 1 foot wide. But I am not sure I would consider this 3 "linear yards".
But, if 1 linear yard is considered 3 ft long by 1 foot wide, and I am not saying it is, and you would use 6 oz. per square yard, I would use 2 oz. for an area 1 foot wide and a yard long.
