Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. I have a fabric that is 5.5oz/sq yard. I need to know what the weight is in grams/sq meter.
How do get there from here?

1 lb = 16 oz = 435.59237 g
1 yd = 0.9144 m
so
5.5 oz/ sq yd x 453.59237 g/16 oz x (1 yd/0.9144 m)^2 =
186.5 g/m^2

Much easier conversion. use conversion factor 33.906 to convert oz/sqyd to gr/sqm
5.5 oz/sqyd x 33.906=186.483 gm/sqm

GSM aka g/m2 = grams per square meter
oz/yd2 = ounces per yard squared
1 gram = 0.03527 ounces
1 lb = 16 oz = 435.59237 grams
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 yd = 36 inches = 0.9144 m = 91.44 cm
Conversion formulas:
There is an easy way to convert gsm to oz/yd2.
Divide the gsm by 33.906 - really that is all.
To determine gsm from oz/yd2 you do the reverse - multiple by 33.906.
If it helps, this is what the formulas are based upon:
1 oz = 28.3495231 grams
1 yard = 0.9144 meters
1 yard squared = 0.9144 m x 0.9144 m = 0.83612736 meters squared
Therefore
1 oz/yd2 = 28.3495231g/.83612736 m2 = 33.90574744 g/m2
Rounded up to three decimal places it is 33.906
Question : If a fabric is 5.5oz/sq yard, how many the weight is in grams/sq meter ?
Answer : 5.5 oz/sqyd x 33.906 = 186.483 gm/sqm
