Your first problem is converting it to inches. There are several different "gauges" with different names, used for different materials or in different countries.

American Wire Gauge appears to be the same as Browne & Sharp, and used only for non-ferrous metals. I can't find the name for the common American gauge for sheet steel, but it is different from the Birmingham or Stubb's gauge used in the UK.

You really have to know which "gauge" system is being referenced. Google it's name; you'll find a conversion table on the web. If you are lucky, it will include millimeters, but if it only gives diameter or thickness in inches, 25.3 mm = 1 inch.

Correction:

1 inch = 25.4mm

since 25400 microns = 1 in you can then convert to anything :D

Firstly, as gauge increases thickness decreases so if something is say 1mm thick that would be 25 gauge but something 300 gauge should be .075mm.

Secondly,
if 4 microns = 1 gauge
and 25400 microns = 1 inch
and 1 inch = 254 mm
then 254 mm = 25400microns
and thus 1 mm = 100 microns
and finally 1 mm = 25 gauge

So eg 800 gauge Melinex® DTM WHITE LIGHT BLOCK would be 25/800*1mm = .0313mm or 3.13microns. That's thin! Too thin.

You are right and wrong.

Thickness in metal gauge decreses with thickness and in plastic gauge it increases. The multiplyer 1micron = 4 (plastic) gauge is correct.

I just measured the thickness of a 1200 guage sheet of polythene.
It was about 0,012 inch, or 0,32 mm.
So 1000 guage must be 0,01 inch, and there are 100.000 units of "guage" in an inch.
So there are about 4.000 guages to the mm.

Gague increases as thickness decreases because it is a fractional figure. i.e. 10 gague is 1/10th of an inch, 14 gague is 1/14th of an inch, 16th gague is 1/16 of an inch. This is from the English system for sheet metal. I thought that the Yanlks used the same logic. But maybe not. At least we know that an American inch is the same as an English. Wire gague may be different. But the principle stays the same. Hope that helps some.

0.5 mm is how much gauge. what is 26 and 24 gauge as per mm
